New Secretary ‘Delivers’ On Third Day At Work

Nora Johnson, a secretary hired to work in St. Luke’s Hospital’s Laboratory Department, didn’t know she would be called into patient care on just her third day – but she was.

At St. Vincent’s Medical Center for training, she was in the Dillon Garage when she heard someone screaming as soon as she stepped out of her car. “I saw a man standing by his open car door, screaming ‘Please help me!’”

Not knowing what to expect, Johnson looked inside of the car and saw a mother giving birth.”

“The baby’s head was already out!” she recalled.

“I blocked everything and everyone out of my mind and dropped to my knees, cleared the baby’s face and mouth and told the mother to push one more time,” said Johnson. “The baby girl came out into my arms. Someone tossed me a lab jacket so I could wrap the baby and place her on her mother’s stomach,” Johnson said. “It was so awesome!”

Johnson admitted to being a bit embarrassed by the attention and said that the ER nurses were on the scene immediately so she left – without even see the mother’s face.

“That’s what I call multi-tasking!” said Lynette Chakkaphak, Director of Laboratory Services. “Way to go, Nora!”
