Diabetes Education At SLH Goes Interactive

Maps, DVDs, Board Games - Oh My. The St. Vincent's HealthCare Outpatient Diabetes team is pulling out all the stops to tell patients about how to control their diabetes with a new interactive program, "On The Road To Managing Your Diabetes."

If you've recently been diagnosed with diabetes or have pre-diabetes, or even if you've had diabetes for years, you'll benefit by this exciting new class. It will put you in the driver's seat, so you can take control of your diabetes and your good health.

Diabetes Educators, Cecilia Hennig and Dona Weber, promises there are no more "blah, blah, blah" lectures. The interactive games are fun and they allow participants to maneuver the road using Conversational Maps - exciting, colorful board games and pieces that teach everything you need to know about managing the disease

"On The Road to Managing Your Diabetes" replaces the other diabetes-related classes previously offered. It is an 8-hour class offered in either two 4-hour sessions or in one 8-hour session. The program begins at St. Luke's Hospital on April 7.

In order to join, participants need a physician's referral and a patient assessment. Fees can be paid by Medicare, private insurance or self-pay. Most insurances provide coverage for 10 hours of diabetes education during the first year after diagnosis, then two hours each year thereafter. Pre-registration is required for the classes and can be accomplished by calling 904-308-7534.

On the Road to Managing Your Diabetes is sponsored by the American Diabetes Association and Merck Pharmaceuticals.
